Ultra Light Spinning Rod + Reel = $150 - $200. Any suggestions?
Hello everyone!
I am willing to buy an ultra light rod. I have several criterias to match:
1. I am not looking for a cheap one. I have up-to $150 - $200 to spend on a rod with a reel.
2. One of the MOST crucial things I am looking for is as short as possible… I am not talking about those super short "ice fishing rods", but something like 4′ or even less or somewhere close to it.
3. I am looking at something like 4, maximum 5 pounds test limit
4. Dark colors are boooaring! I like my rods bright: orange, red, blue! This is optional ofcource…
What I am looking to get out of this is just names of manufactures that make some good stuff. Then I’ll browse them and find a nice rod, find a nice reel and get them! I don’t like combos. I like to match my stuff myself to make it perfect.
Any suggestions?

The St. Croix Premier Spinning Rod is available in two ultra-light sizes, 4′6" & 5′6". Most rod manufacturers don’t make anything much shorter than 4′6 unless you’re ice fishing. 4′6 should be small enough, also the rod is rated for 2-6 pound test, and for 1/16-ounce to 1/4-ounce lures. This would be one heck of a Trout/Crappie/Panfish rod! St. Croix is the most dependable rod maker in the fishing industry, in my opinion. Oh and the rod is black but you said bright rods are not a need.
Pflueger’s President reel in the ultra-light version, is a moderately priced (expensive priced if in condolence with other ultra light reels) spinning reel with a smooth drag system, and dependable name. It also holds 105-yards of 4-pound line.
As for the line to use, I would personally use Berkley Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon or Berkley Trilene XL Smooth Casting in 4-pound versions.
I hope I helped you make a decision!

Use a custom rod builder and have it made exactly to the specs that you want.

1. I suggest you re-think purchasing a 5 FT rod. Longer UL rods offer better "leverage" which helps you to subdue larger fish you may hook. Longer rods also offer a "shock absorber" when your using super-lite line, allowing you to fight the fish with the rod as much as the reel.
Longer is better, (period).
However, here are some idea’s for a rod, "short and long":

Other good rod makers? Fenwick, Lamiglass & G. Loomis.
Good Spinning Reel company’s? Shimano, Pflueger & Daiwa.
Go to Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas for further info. Both these compnay’s have review area’s for each product.
Hope this helps ya?
