Accounts in Genesis

If you read the first two chapters in Genesis, they do not contradict each other.

Chapter One tells the history of creation and the order in which everything was created, with, of course, man and woman being the last creation.

Chapter Two CONFIRMS this. In verse 4, it again says "This is a history of the heavens and the earth…" and re-tells it, only this time adding in details that were not in Chapter One and starting from Day 3, in which dry land was formed.

In verse 7 of Chapter Two, it says that God put man in the garden Eden. Therefore, the garden had already been formed before man.

****

NU 25:9 24,000 died in the plague.
1CO 10:8 23,000 died in the plague

In Numbers 25: 4, 5, Moses was instructed to kill the "head ones" (or ringleaders) and to be then hung up and exposed publicly. Therefore, the 23, 000 refers to those who died DIRECTLY as a result of the scourge. In addition with the "head ones", the total would have resulted in 24, 000.

****
JG 4:21 Sisera was sleeping when Jael killed him.
JG 5:25-27 Sisera was standing.

JG 4: 22 says that Sisera had "fallen dead". Therefore, when we read in Chapter Five that he had "falled" at Jael’s feet, this makes much more sense.

****

1SA 16:10-11, 17:12 Jesse had eight sons
1CH 2:13-15 He had seven total.

Jesse DID have eight sons. However, one is not mentioned in genealogical accounts likely because he died before fathering sons of his own.

****

1SA 16:19-23 Saul knew David well before the latter’s encounter with Goliath.
1SA 17:55-58 Saul did not know David at the time of his encounter with Goliath

In Chapter 17, when Saul asks "Whose son are you?", it is likely that he wanted to know much more than just who David’s father was. Although David did reply with his fathers name in verse 58, the following verse in Chapter 18 where is says that David had continued to speak with Saul for quite some time. Therefore, he would’ve have spoken more about than just his lineage but rather about what Saul REALLY wanted to know - what kind of a person David was (so that he was able to kill Goliath.)

Similar uses of the question "Who?" appear in other parts of the Bible as well. For example, in Exodus 5:2, where Pharaoh asked "Who is God?" He was not merely asking for a simple, one word answer. He was asking who is God, what is it that makes the Israelites’ God so special that he (Pharaoh) should obey him.

****

2SA 6:23 Michal was childless.
2SA 21:8 She had five sons.

With regards to this one, many Bible theologians agree that it was likely that Michal raised her sister, Merab’s, five sons after her sister’s death.

Some translations do, in fact, translate Michal as Merab in the second verse.

****

2SA 24:1 The Lord inspired David to take the census.
1CH 21:1 Satan inspired the census.

A more accurate translation shows that in 2 Samuel 24:1, God became angry because someone had inspired David to take the census. That someone is later identified as Satan. This translation is evident in many Bibles including AT, NE, RS, JB, and Mo.

****

2KI 24:17 Jehoiachin (Jehoaikim) was succeeded by his uncle.
2CH 36:10 He was succeeded by his brother.

A more accurate translation show’s that it was his FATHER’s brother that he was succeeded by - which, in fact, is his uncle.

There we go. :) I just spent a good part of 45 minutes explaining that the passages you have chosen are not, in fact, contradictions. I hope you take the time to read the explanations. :)

Well I’ll be darned. You mean a holy book contradicts itself? Get out of here!

Lol…as someone who doesn’t prescribe to organized religion, I would say that if these quotes are valid they solidify my opinion that religious texts shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

What’s your question?
Peachfuzz | Jan 08, 2010

To fully understand the meanings of the Holy Bible you have to have some fundamental understandings of the Languages in which the Bible was originally written. All of your Bible verses can be explained if you would know the culture of the day. Anyway I hope your ignorance gets a big dose of truth before it’s too late for you.

Hmmm. Funny that. Almost like it was a fiction that someone had made up…

The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster has waaay fewer plot holes… I mean ideological errors.
Destrii | Jan 08, 2010

wow…
it’s so shocking for the book of mistranslations and lies to contradict itself!
Kitty | Jan 08, 2010

I think I am not bothered to read.
Fardip | Jan 08, 2010

I’m sure I can pull out my online bible and show all this out of context. Frankly I value my time more than you do I think. Also I don’t really care what you believe.
